The Ultimate Guide to Selling Your Unwanted Gym Membership

A definitive manual on offloading those gym fees legally.

Gym memberships are notoriously easy to sign up for but often incredibly difficult to cancel. If you have recently moved, suffered an injury, or simply lack the motivation to go, being locked into a 12 or 24-month contract can be a huge drain on your finances. The good news is that many popular large health clubs allow you to sell or transfer your membership to someone else.

1. Review Your Contract

The most important first step is reading the fine print. Most major gym chains (think LA Fitness, Equinox, Anytime Fitness, Planet Fitness) have specific clauses addressing contract transfers. Look for terms like "Transferability" or "Assignment." Often, they will allow a transfer if you pay a nominal transfer fee (e.g., $50) which is generally much lower than the actual cancellation fee that could cost hundreds of dollars.

2. Determine the Remaining Value

Before listing your membership on MemberShift, you need to calculate exactly how much it's worth. If you have a $100/month membership with six months left, the total value is $600. To incentivize a buyer, you should offer a discount on that remaining balance. A $400 upfront payment for $600 worth of gym access is an excellent deal for a new user who doesn't want to sign a full long-term contract themselves.

3. Create a Compelling Listing

When posting on MemberShift or another marketplace, clarity is key. Be sure to specify:

  • The exact gym location (or whether it's an "All-Club Access" tier).
  • The exact end date of the contract.
  • The monthly rate they are getting versus the current market rate.
  • Who is covering the transfer fee (often split between buyer and seller).

4. Facilitate the Transfer

Once you have found a buyer, the physical or digital transfer is the final hurdle. In most scenarios, the current owner and the new buyer need to either call the local membership desk or visit in person. They will draft a new agreement that absolves you of any future financial liability. Do NOT merely hand someone your key fob and continue paying the bill on their behalf—this is a breach of contract and leaves you legally responsible for any damages or skipped payments!
